The Kamloops Blazers will be celebrating head coach Don Hay’s record-breaking coaching wins achievement in a special pre-game ceremony on Friday, Feb. 16, when the Kelowna Rockets visit Sandman Centre.

On Jan. 27, the Blazers defeated the visiting Portland Winterhawks 4-2, giving Hay win No. 743 and making the bench boss the winningest coach in Western Hockey League history. Hay passed former WInterhawks coach Ken Hodge, who retired in 1993 with 742 WHL victories.

The pre-game ceremony on Feb. 16 will include messages from some of Hay’s closest colleagues,  along with a banner-raising ceremony. The first 4,000 fans through the doors will receive a specialty puck, sponsored by Warner Rentals, recognizing Hay’s feat.

“We are thrilled to celebrate Don’s milestone,” said Blazers president and COO Don Moores. “He was born and raised in Kamloops and to be able to accomplish this rare feat with his hometown team is something to be celebrated and remembered.”

Hay said win No. 743 was a team accomplishment and a recognition of the players and staff  with whom we has worked.

“This celebration is for the community,” Hay said. “When you grow up here and have lived all your life here, you feel that a lot of the Kamloops community has helped in this achievement.”
