Ward fends of Cougars
Ben Ward continued his strong play for the Kamloops Junior Blazers on the weekend, tallying two goals and an assist in a pair of 4-3 wins over the visiting Prince George Cougars.
Ward was exceptional for the bantam tier 1 squad in the Okanagan Mainline Amateur Hockey Association championship series earlier this season. The exhibition series against Prince George was a tune up for the clubs in advance of the bantam provincials in Coquitlam on the weekend.
Connor Milburn also had three points on the weekend for the Blazers, notching a goal and two assists. Hunter Becket (2G), Alek Erichuk (1G, 1A),Kaiden Dempsey (1G), Eric Bertuzzi (1G), Gavin Mattey (2A), Josh Van Unen (1A), Aidan Sutter (1A), Brendan Kirschner (1A), Hayden Fidanza (1A) and Cole Howaniec (1A) also hit the scoresheet for Kamloops over the weekend.
The Blazers will open provincial play on March 13 against the Cougars. They will then play games against the Burnaby Winter Club, Nanaimo, Coquitlam and the North Shore Winter Club.
Overtime heartbreak
The Thompson-Okanagan Lakers were knocked out of contention for the Esso Cup on the weekend, losing a series-deciding game against the Prince George Northern Capitals in the Cariboo city.
The Lakers, who play in B.C. Hockey’s Female Midget AAA league, fell 3-2 in overtime in Game 3, giving the Northern Capitals a 2-1 series victory. Thompson-Okanagan had won Game 1, 3-2, but fell in Game 2 by the same score.
Ashley McCabe (3G), Samantha Head (2G), Laine Grace (1G, 1A), Christy Blackburne (1G, 1A), Jenna Fletcher (2A), Kendall Fitzgerald (2A), Brenna Hannon (1A), Kayla Waldbiling (1A) and Riley Henderson (1A) rounded out the scoring over the series.
Snipers out shot
The Coyotes took down the Snipers in atom playoff action on the weekend, led by a four-point (3G, 1A) night from Austin Barrett.
Robert Gyger (2G, 1A), Aaron Cattermole (1G, 1A), Ty Jarman (1G) and Danny Lewis (1G) also hit the scoresheet for the victors.
Brady Ashby and Aaron Price led the Snipers with a pair of goals each. Sebastian Thomas (1G, 2A), Ethan Nolan (1G), Jeremy Yates (1G) and Aiden Boyhey (2A) also had points.
Kyran Prasad backstopped the Coyotes, while Ben Turvey was in net for the Snipers.
Cyclones strong
Alex Wright led the way with four goals as the Cyclones took down the Chiefs in bantam recreation action at Brock Arena on the weekend.
Mason Foster (2G), Braeden Crowe (2G), Garrett Grubisa (1G, 1A), Eric Crawford (1G, 1A), Jacob Ker-Piva (1G, 1A), Zac Teale (1G), Grady Christiansen (2A) and Tanner Shreeves (1A) also scored for the Cyclones, who had Zack Kohorst in goal.
Lief Martin led the effort by the Chiefs with two goals and an assist. Quinton Maurer (1G), Tristan Collins (1G) and Rylan McCaleb (1A) also hit the scoresheet in support of goaltender Josh Hoffman.
Playoff deadlock
The KGHM Ajax Chiefs and the KGHM Ajax Moss Giants played to a 4-4 draw in playoff action on the weekend.
The Moss Giants had points from Parker Matheson (2G, 1A), Mat Erichuck (1G), Grady Whitmore (1G), Harrison Rosch (2A) and Angus McQuillan Gordon (1A) and went with James Lamb between the pipes.
The Chiefs were lead by Tyler Baker (3G) and also had scoring from Sam Perrin (1G), Lukas Meertens (2A), Jake Stanley (1A), Brayden Patterson (1A), Carter Grice (1A) and Skye Conners (1A). Joshua Harris was in net.
Trump Card
Max Card notched two goals and one assist for the Pit Bulls in a 3-2 victory over the Ice Hawks in peewee recreation play on the weekend.
Also recording points for the Pit Bulls were Lochlan Scholefield (1G) and Austin Rankin (2A).
Zane Rolfsen was the winning netminder.
Jack Garner (1G), Adam Surgenor (1G), Jack Gelsvik (1A) and Quentin Ouimet (1A) had points for the Ice Hawks in support of goaltender Ryerson Palmer.
On target
The Young Guns topped the Warriors 5-3 in peewee recreational play on Saturday on McArthur Island.
Tallying points for the Young Guns were Chase Badger (3G), Brady Pawlachuk (1G), Tyler Trudeau (1G) and Rhys Gustafason (4A).
Jacob Bradley backstopped the Young Guns.
Landon McGillis (2G, 1A), Ethan Gremaud (1G), Jeremy Hofmann (1A) and Zakary Carter (1A) found the scoresheet for the Warriors in support of netminder Zachary Kohorst.
Blazers on top
The Kamloops Blazers thumped Vernon 7-1 in peewee tier 1 play on Sunday at Brock Arena.
Logan Stankoven (2G, 2A), Reagan Milburn (1G, 1A), Carson Evoy (1G), Ethan Sanders (1G), Matt ward (1G), Owen Barrow (1G), Tyson Galloway (2A), Tristan Allen (2A), Brandon Toye (1A) and Ashton Taylor (1A) had points for Kamloops.
Sam Begg and Jared Sucro split time between the pipes.
Busy weekend
The atom development Scotiabank Blazers posted a 2-1 record on the weekend, falling 5-0 to Salmon Arm on Friday before earning 5-2 and 3-0 wins over Chilliwack on Saturday.
Jakob Gottfriedson (2G 1A), Wyatt Gowans (2G), Myles Walker (1G, 2A), Jacob Cupello (1G), Nik Dimopoulos (1G), Carson Sutherland (1G), Chase Besse (1A), Dominic Malinsky-Triska (1A) and Rory Mumford (1A) had points on the weekend for the Blazers.
Eric Brock and Kaiden Goddard split time between the pipes in Kamloops’ first two games of the weekend and Goddard played 60 minutes in the third game.
Tie game
The Chill and the Raptors tied 6-6 in atom recreation playoff action at Sandman Centre on Sunday.
